John Wesley Coleman III - The Last Donkey Show (2012)

John Wesley Coleman is one of our discoveries of last year. Self-proclaimed "trash poet", a member of the Golden Boys with whom he has recorded five albums, the last Dirty Fingernailsreleased this year, John Wesley Coleman is a prolific artist and multi-faceted.
After a disc that has a book of poems, American Trash in 2008, an LP Steal My Mind in 2009, another Bad Lady Goes To Jail in 2010 and this very good EP Personality Pancake last year, the guy comes back with a new LP under his arm, Last Donkey Show, recorded in California in the studios of Greg Ashley.
For completeness, another album was released recently on Monofonus Press, titled Silly Street Nightmare On ... 3 albums in a few months: there is something legitimately feared an artistic breath.

Listening to this LP we say that it will not for now. The beginning of the album is even more flamboyant with "My Grave" drenched keyboards and "A Clown Gave You A Baby" in a similar vein to the recordings of Golden Boys. The hesitant voice (alcoholic?) By John Wesley Coleman has made a very special flavor to these songs that unify them as King Khan & BBQ. But behind this introduction reassuring, John Wesley Coleman is a measure of its potential and its attractiveness to other spheres and musical chapels: "Virgin Queen Mary" while mid-tempo where JWC sings so detached, playing perfectly his Texas troubadour role, while the addictive "Do not Waste My Time" with heady piano chords, enhanced by brass, confirms the ability of man to write beautiful compositions. At worst, even when it's not excellent, it has the ability to add madness to medium pieces like "The Howling"where he teaches in the sub-Leg James Version Solitary Pleasure .

The B side is even more relaxed, John Wesley Coleman appears freewheeling, with "The Last Donkey Show" at the organ, "Country Song" an absolute coolness even though we may regret its very classical while that "Hanging Around" eyeing the side of the Strange Boys and "She's Like Dracula" to Jonathan Richman. If this side is eminently cool friendly on many titles, it is difficult to get excited about the end of the spinning disc somewhat round, John Wesley Coleman pretending that falter on "Running Into The Bulls", dragging despite good ideas (his voice is coupled with a female voice) or "Flower In The Dark", folk ballad to announce the perfect nap time ...

Less essential, more disjointed than the last album of Golden Boys, Last Donkey Show is a record of very good that finally wearing leg of its author, John Wesley Coleman touches everything, who tried his hand at various styles with more varying degrees of success but a desire to do well which is worth many talents.

John Wesley Coleman & Morgan Coy – Nightmare on Silly Street LP (Monofonus Press)

I know that people put out JWC records because they love the guy’s music (and probably the guy himself). I’ve had a tough time entering the space required to get me to where they are, but the first side ofNightmare on Silly Street is the closest I’ve come, a bare and personal statement by an artist who lets you look deep inside his head, despite the dangers of that the outside world can bring to that kind of open space. Where previous efforts like Little Miss Keith Richards sounded like wild and spontaneous stabs into medicated, whiskey-saturated nothingness, there is real heart and a fragility to songs like “Psychiatrist” that transfers onto the artist himself. Side A is all Coleman’s finished originals, probably enough of this for one sitting, while side B is comprised of re-edited versions of each song by Morgan Coy, sourced from the four-track cassette recordings used to make these songs, and enough for two leftovers. It’s an interesting treatment for sure, but not necessarily one that makes it any more clear as to where  exactly Wes is coming from. At least half of this record is recommended. LA VINYL RECORDS EXAMINER rad review thank you!

John Wesley Coleman III "Alone By The Door"

The water in Austin, Texas must have something special in it, because some of the best rock 'n' roll records on the planet have been coming from there lately. Stellar hardcore from the Creamers, genre-bending (and mind-bending) punk and roll from the OBN III's, as well as OBN III's front man Orville Neely's Ramones-tinged side project, Bad Sports. And don't forget the Golden Boys, Austin's long-running scruffy super group, which has released several long players over the past few years, most recently the incredible "Dirty Fingernails" from 12XU Records. Golden Boys front man John Wesley Coleman also has an impressive solo career under his own name. If you haven't heard his two long-players from Goner Records, by all means seek them out. Not content to dish out easily definable music, Coleman paints from a diverse sonic palette that draws influences from country, punk, folk and straight ahead pop. His most recent single is fromSophomore Lounge records and is limited to 200 copies, which makes it a guaranteed collector's item. While I think these super limited, barely attainable pressings that have been coming out from labels like Total Punk and Suicide Squeeze are kind of irritating, we can forgive the good folks at Sophomore Lounge because this platter is one heart achingly beautiful slice of pop. The two cuts, "Along By the Door," and "I Want You to Be Like Everybody Else" are perhaps Coleman's mellowest and ambitious recordings to date. Softer and less jokey than his most recent full-length from Goner, "The Last Donkey Show," the music floats like summer clouds, buoyed by a mix of piano, guitar, bowed bass and even Theremin. The songs are sad and melancholy, but there's also a brightness to them, a crisp naturalness, like fresh laundry drying on a line in the sun. It's not too late to snag a copy, either. Take a listen here.

The Golden Boys
DIRTY FINGERNAILS-(12XU)-
I’d heard a song by these Austin cats on a previous 12XU comp (CASUAL VICTIM PILE) and liked what I’d heard and now here’s a whole record and I’m happy to say that the Golden Boys have delivered the goods. Wait (the DAGGER research editor just whispered something in my ear) you’re telling me that these guys already have 4 previous records out??!! OK, so where the hell have I been (obviously with my head up my ass and not in ATX). Their frontman is John Wesley Coleman (I reviewed his lately solo record on this very site a month or two back) and I’m not sure there’s anything this guy can’t do and he and his unkempt pals create a hotbed of deep fried, extra greasy rock n’ roll that is nearly impossible not to like. This rousing 11-song record is a hoot from start to finish with musical daggers (heh heh) like opening tune “California” (also a single/video), the catchy “Run Away”, the stompin’ title track, the keyboard-soaked “Outta the Dark”, musical poem “Daddy’s Horsewife’ and the, dare I say, tender (not really) “Didn’t I Tell Ya’ Babe.” That’s just side 1 but trust me, side 2 is just as good. I’d ask these guys to play my wedding if I wasn’t already married so the next best thing is just pray they play Denver before the year’s out (or there will be trouble). DIRTY FINGERNAILS is already on my short list for best records of 2012. www.12xu.net
